The pattern day trader rule has been replaced
For over 20 years, a US margin account that made four or more day trades in five business days needed at least $25,000 in equity. The SEC approved FINRA’s replacement in April 2026. The new intraday margin rules took effect on 4 June 2026, and brokers have until 20 October 2027 to switch over, so your broker may still be counting day trades.
For practice, the practical change is that small accounts can now day trade where their broker has adopted the new rules. That makes it more important to practise intraday risk control first, because the old rule was, in effect, a brake on overtrading.
