What SEBI’s F&O study means for practice

In September 2024, SEBI published a study of more than 1 crore individual equity F&O traders. 93% of them lost money between FY22 and FY24, with an average loss of about ₹2 lakh each including transaction costs. Only around 1% made more than ₹1 lakh in profit after costs.

The lesson for paper trading is not to find a cleverer options strategy. It is to practise position sizing, stop losses and journaling until you can stick to them, because that is what most losing traders skip.

Crypto in India: practise with the tax in mind

Crypto gains in India are taxed at a flat 30%, losses can’t be offset against other income, and 1% TDS applies on transfers. Budget 2026 left these rules unchanged. Exchanges serving Indian users must be registered with FIU-IND.

For practice, this changes the maths. A strategy that makes many small profits can still lose money after tax, because each winning trade is taxed while losing trades don’t reduce it. When you review your paper trades, take 30% off each winning crypto trade to see what you would really keep.

US stocks and crypto in IST

The US regular session runs from 7:00 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. IST when the US is on daylight saving time (roughly March to early November), and from 8:00 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. IST the rest of the year. Crypto trades 24/7, so you can practise during Indian daytime hours.
