What it means
Gold is priced in US dollars, so a weaker dollar tends to make gold cheaper for other currencies and supports its price. Over many periods gold and the dollar index (DXY) move in opposite directions.
The relationship is a tendency, not a law: in risk-off episodes both can rise together as safe havens.
Why traders use it
Traders use the dollar as context for gold: a gold long while the dollar is breaking higher has a headwind; the same long while the dollar is falling has a tailwind.
Chart examples
Gold up, dollar down, then both up
How to identify it objectively
- 1Plot gold and DXY on the same timeframe.
- 2Compare their direction over the last 20–50 bars.
- 3Note periods where they move together instead of apart.
- 4Use a rolling correlation to measure the relationship (see the correlation lesson).
Bullish use
- 1Gold setup aligned with a falling dollar.
- 2A break of a dollar support can add conviction to gold longs.
Bearish use
- 1Gold short aligned with a rising dollar.
- 2A dollar breakout can pressure gold.
What confirms it
- The inverse relationship has held recently.
- Both charts show structure breaks in opposite directions.
What invalidates it
- Both rise together (safe-haven demand).
- The correlation turns positive.
How a hypothetical setup is built
Entry
Take a gold setup only when the dollar is not moving strongly against it.
Stop
From the gold setup itself.
Target
From the gold setup; reduce size if the dollar turns.
A hypothetical illustration of how the concept is turned into a plan, not a recommendation. Practise it on a paper account first.

Historical testing
Not tested on The Tradeskill. The drawing is schematic: gold rises while DXY falls, then both rise together at the end.
Limitations: when it fails
- Correlations change over time.
- News can move both in the same direction.
- Context only; it does not time entries.
