Delta Divergence (CVD Divergence)

What delta and CVD divergence are, how to spot price making a new high while cumulative delta does not, and why trade classification limits what it proves.

Library categories

What it means

Delta is aggressive buy volume minus aggressive sell volume in a candle. Cumulative volume delta (CVD) adds delta up over time. A divergence is when price makes a new high (or low) but CVD does not.

Why traders use it

If price rises to a new high but fewer aggressive buyers drove it, the move may be running on passive orders or short covering rather than new demand. It is a warning, not a reversal signal.

Higher high in price, lower high in CVD

Price: higher highDivergenceDeltaCVD
Delta per candle and the running CVD are schematic. Price makes a higher high but CVD peaks lower, then price turns down.Schematic diagrams drawn to explain the idea; they are not market data.

How to identify it objectively

  • 1Plot delta per candle and CVD under price, reset at a fixed time (for example each session).
  • 2Mark price swing highs and the CVD values at the same candles.
  • 3Bearish divergence: higher price high, lower CVD high.
  • 4Bullish divergence: lower price low, higher CVD low.

Bullish use

  • 1Price makes a lower low.
  • 2CVD makes a higher low.
  • 3Wait for a price structure break before acting.

Bearish use

  • 1Price makes a higher high.
  • 2CVD makes a lower high.
  • 3Wait for a price structure break down.

What confirms it

  • A price-based trigger (CHoCH, sweep and reclaim).
  • Divergence at a key level.

What invalidates it

  • CVD catches up with price on the next push.

How a hypothetical setup is built

Entry

After the divergence, on a structure break in the divergence direction.

Stop

Beyond the divergent swing.

Target

The prior swing on the opposite side.

A hypothetical illustration of how the concept is turned into a plan, not a recommendation. Practise it on a paper account first.

Historical testing

Not tested on The Tradeskill. CVD values depend on the exchange feed and how trades are classified as buyer- or seller-initiated.

Limitations: when it fails

  • Different feeds give different delta.
  • Divergences can persist through long trends.
  • Delta shows aggression, not intent or remaining orders.
