Opening Range Breakout (ORB)

How the opening range breakout (ORB) works: defining the opening range, breakout entry rules, false breakouts back into the range and risk placement.

What it means

The opening range is the high and low of the first part of a session, for example the first 15 or 30 minutes after the open. An opening range breakout trades a close beyond that range.

A close back inside the range after a break is a failed breakout, which some traders trade the other way.

Why traders use it

The first minutes of a session absorb overnight news and set an initial balance. A decisive move out of it can show the direction participants chose for the session.

How to identify it objectively

  • 1Choose the session open and range length (for example 30 minutes) and keep them fixed.
  • 2Mark the range high and low.
  • 3Breakout: a candle closes beyond the range.
  • 4Failure: a close back inside within a few candles.

Bullish use

  • 1Close above the opening range high.
  • 2Next candles hold above it.
  • 3Stop below the range midpoint or low.

Bearish use

  • 1Close below the opening range low.
  • 2Next candles hold below it.
  • 3Stop above the range midpoint or high.

What confirms it

  • A strong body on the breakout candle.
  • Holding beyond the range for several candles.
  • Higher-timeframe bias agrees.

What invalidates it

  • A close back inside the range.
  • A breakout against a strong higher-timeframe trend.

How a hypothetical setup is built

Entry

On the close of the breakout candle, or a retest of the range edge.

Stop

Inside the range, at its midpoint or opposite side.

Target

A multiple of the range height (for example 1× to 2×).

A hypothetical illustration of how the concept is turned into a plan, not a recommendation. Practise it on a paper account first.

Historical testing

Not tested on The Tradeskill. ORB is easy to define exactly, which makes it a good first strategy to backtest yourself in replay.

Limitations: when it fails

  • Many ranges break both ways on the same day.
  • Wide ranges make stops large.
  • News at the open can whip both sides.
